New mural to decorate Rochester Memorial School

May 10, 2018

Artist Todd Woodward will be painting a new mural on a courtyard wall at Rochester Memorial School, Principal Derek Medeiros told the School Committee on May 9.

"It's spring-themed," Medeiros said in explaining the mural to committee members, who approved it. "I think it's daffodils."

Old Rochester School District Assistant Superindent Elise Frangos leaned over his shoulder to look at the design proposal. "Oh, it's beautiful!" she said. "But those are poppies. There isn't a daffodil in there."

Medeiros laughed. "Mrs. Medeiros clearly tends the garden at home," he joked.

Medeiros said that he expected work on the mural to begin around the first week of June. The funds for the artwork were provided by the Parent-Teacher Organization's Cultural Committee.

The mural will be painted in a courtyard facing the library that is not traditionally used by students. "[Students] don't use it," Medeiros explained, "but, of course, we'll have it blocked off anyway."

Woodward has already created one tri-town mural, on display at Old Rochester Regional Junior High School. He is a graduate of the Old Rochester Regional school district. He is an award-winning tattoo artist with several murals to his name. He created the junior high's mural alongside fellow artist and Old Rochester graduate Ryan McFee.
