Jul 10, 2018

An Old Rochester High School student has been selected to participate in an elite oceanography and science program funded by the federal government aimed at training the next generation of marine scientists.

Mia Quinlan of Marion, 16, has been granted a full scholarship to attend Ocean Exploration Navy Science and Technology Camp.

Quinlan is one of 20 students who will participate in this program, which is held at the University of Rhode Island. Funding for this scholarship is provided by the U.S. Office of Naval Research.

This week-long camp, which will be held in August, focuses on exploring the ocean using marine technologies. Students will build and test a variety of oceanographic tools and instruments, including remotely operated vehicles and ocean sensors.

Students will also engage with scientists who are involved in active missions to explore the ocean.
