Free classical music series kicks off July 11

The 22nd Annual Buzzards Bay Musicfest will once again feature, in addition its classical music and chamber concerts, the Buzzards Bay Musicfest Swing Band performing many familiar and popular tunes recognized by music-loving audiences around the nation.

Prior to that, the free classical music series kicks off at 8 p.m., Wednesday, July 11, in Tabor Academy’s Fireman Performing Arts Center, located at 235 Front St. The Buzzards Bay Musicfest runs from July 11-15. More than 40 world class and international musicians will be performing. All performances are held in the Fireman Performing Arts Center.

The 10-piece swing band program, “Celebrating the Great American Songbook”, will happen 8 p.m. on Friday, July 13, and features band leader Phil Sanborn on trombone, Bryan Steele on alto saxophone, Arnie Krakowsky on tenor saxophone, Karen Sanborn on baritone saxophone, Tom Kirinsky on trumpet, Bill Kingsland on trumpet, Donn Legge on guitar, Matt Richard on piano, Dave Zinno on bass, and Gary Johnson on drums.

Wednesday, July 11, 8 p.m.: Orchestra Concert Oboe Concerto in C Minor by Domenico Cimarosa. Alex Klein on oboe. Psyco: A Suite for Strings by Bernard Herrmann. Introduction & Allegro Appassionato for Piano and Orchestra in G Major, Op.92 by Robert Schumann. David Allen Wehr on piano. Symphony No. 88 in G Major by Joseph Haydn.

Thursday, July 12, 8 p.m.: Chamber Music. Trio for Spry Clarinet, Weeping Cello and Ruminating Harp by Gilad Cohen. Jonathan Cohen on clarinet, Mariusz Skula on cello, and Rita Costanzi on harp. Quintet in G Minor, op. 39 by Sergei Prokofieff. Rachel Stegeman on violin, Roger Myers on viola, Jonathan Gunn on clarinet, Alex Klein on  oboe, and Nic Tsolainos on bass.

String Quintet in C Major Opus 42. No. 2 by Luigi Ridolfo Boccherini. Eric Tanner on violin 1, Stephen Alan Shepard on violin 2, Mark Tukh on viola; Claudio Jaffe on cello 1, and Mariusz Skula on cello 2.

Septet in E Flat Major Opus 65 by Camille St. Saens. Joseph Foley on trumpet, David Allen Wehr on piano, Ole Bohn on violin 1, Tobias Chisnall on violin 2, Mark Tukh on viola, Claudio Jaffe on cello, and Robert Skavronski on bass.

Friday, July 13, 8 p.m.: Buzzards Bay Musicfest Swing Band “Celebrating the Great American Songbook”.

Saturday, July 14, 8 p.m.: Chamber Music concert. Pieces en trio for Flute, Cello & Harp Opus 80 by Joseph Jongen. Barbara O’Brien on flute, Claudio Jaffe on cello, and Rita Costanzi on harp.

String Quintet K.174 in B Flat Major by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Eric Tanner on violin 1; Stephen Alan Shepard on violin 2, Consuelo Sherba on viola, and Claudio Jaffe on cello.

Quintet for Piano & Strings in C Minor Opus 1 by Erno Dohnanyi. David Allen Wehr on piano, Charles Stegeman on violin 1, Rachel Stegeman on violin 2, Roger Myers on viola, and John Walz on cello.

Sunday, July 15, 2 p.m.: Orchestra Concert. Overture to La Scala di Seta by Gioachino Rossini. Concerto for Piccolo and Orchestra by Ken Benshoof. Jennifer Gunn on piccolo. Suenos de Sefarad for Strings by David Stock.

Symphony No. 7, Opus 92 in A Major by Ludwig van Beethoven.
