WITH VIDEO: Rochester Bakery and Cafe demolition begins

Nov 14, 2011

Demolition work on the former Rochester Bakery and Cafe building began Monday morning nearly four months after a fire ravaged the structure.

The cause of the July 28 fire was ruled as "undetermined" by State Fire Marshall's office due to the inability to narrow the possibilities down to one option. The fire was either caused by "improper disposal of smoking materials," such as cigarettes or matches or by the gas grill that was on the rear deck of the building. The fire began on the rear deck.

The building that housed the bakery was shared by Black Tie Cookies and an accountant's office. There were also two apartments above the bakery.

Brian Cook, co-owner of the building, said he didn't know what the future of the property would be.

"Time will tell," Cook said. "It depends on the finances and if we can get renters. It's tough in this economy to put up a commercial building. We just don't know what we'll do yet."

Reis Asphalt and ABC Demolition is doing the demolition work, which should take about three days, according to employee Derek Reis.

"It's just sad to see the 300-year-old building," Cook said.
