Cape Cod 5 comes to Marion village

Nov 29, 2011

Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank, one of the largest banks on the Cape, has recently expanded across the bridge.

Rochester resident and mortgage loan officer Jim Austin is at the helm of the new office at 163 Front Street in Marion, and he says the move is huge not only for Cape Cod 5 but also for the town.

Here’s a short q-and-a session with Jim.

Why is a Cape Cod 5 in Marion such a big deal?

Simply put, we’re filling a void. There’s something missing on this side of the bridge, and the South Coast is looking for a community lender. Cape Cod 5 is the number one lender on the Cape, and this is a perfect fit. We wanted the right spot, and we found it.

How has the reception been so far?

It’s been tremendous. People know we’re here. They know me from living in the area and from being in this business for more than 20 years. When you’re living, working and playing in the community, it makes for a nice fit.

What got you into this business?

I just wanted to do it. But I wanted to be in the front, meeting people and being with customers. I’m not the type to sit back and crunch numbers all day, and with this being such a community-focused company I get to be out and meet folks.

What makes Cape Cod 5 unique?

It’s hard to explain. We just do things differently. We’re small, and we surround ourselves in the people. It’s a community bank, and we take care of our community. It’s the old way of doing things, just staying small.

What type of business do you do?

I see everyone from first time buyers to people wanting to refinance or consolidate debts. We cover all of the bases. Every person is different and you have to meet those needs. Mortgage lending is tough, and it was certainly a different world when I started 20 years ago. But the process starts here.

What are some rewards for you?

Sometimes people simply come in with a lot of questions and, even though we may not get business from them, it’s fun to help them and answer their questions. I like coaching people or helping them to start in the right direction. You try to make it as easy and painless as possible. Home ownership is an important link to the economy, and we want to help folks get started.
