New sod playing field underway at OR
MATTAPOISETT — Though athletes aren’t taking to the fields quite yet at Old Rochester High School, that doesn’t mean they’ve been forgotten
Quite the opposite, actually.
Field renovations began on Sept. 25 to lay down a new playing sod field inside OR’s track for the school’s field hockey team to use. The new field will also have a new sprinkler system.
The project consists of relocating the existing long jump pits, installation of a new sprinkler system, surface re-grading and hydro-seeding.
It’s a joint effort between Tri-town Unified Recreational Facilities. and the Old Rochester Athletic Booster Club, Inc.
“It takes one more thing off of our plate,” Booster Club President Justin Shay said.
“We want to thank all of you who supported the T.U.R.F. initiative and contributed to our BUILD THE NATION fundraiser over the past two years,” the club said in a Facebook post on its page. “Your generous donations make these changes possible!”
Shay said he’s “thrilled” that the girls on the field hockey team finally have a dedicated field to play on.
Because it will only be used by the team, the grass can be kept at a short length, which is ideal for field hockey play.
“These girls deserve it,” Shay said.
