ROCHESTER — Fruits and vegetables grown by farmers and gardeners around the Tri-Town and beyond this summer took center stage in competition for the 117th annual Rochester Grange Fair on Saturday, Aug. 17.

Anything that could be found inside of a cornucopia was judged on Friday, Aug. 17. Winning specimens of each category were then put on display for Saturday’s fair.

Fruits and vegetables were judged on size, shape and color.

The grange fair is not limited to just agriculture. Handmade articles of clothing, artwork, jams and jellies were among other categories that were part of the annual event.

According to Rochester Grange Fair Secretary Susan LaFleur, judges had an especially enjoyable time judging the many baked goods submitted for entry.

“That’s where they really hung up — On the baked goods,” LaFleur joked.

According to LaFleur, 33 different people submitted items or food for entry in the fair.

LaFleur noted that seniors at the Council on Aging played a big role in knitting and sewing items for the fair.

“They really filled up the craft table,” said LaFleur.

Planning for the event was quite time consuming, according to LaFleur.

“It takes quite a while,” said LaFleur. “We start getting the ads for the fair book in the spring. Then you just hope people come and enter.”

LaFleur gave credit to Rochester boy scouts for helping set up and take down the fair.
