Marion to fix Point Road following ‘unprofessional’ pavement repair
MARION — Marion officials are determined to fix areas of Point Road by the end of September after an outside contractor repaired weathered sections of the roadway with uneven patches of asphalt, creating bumpy and uncomfortable driving conditions.
“If you drive down there, it’s just not a comfortable drive and the residents deserve a better patch job,” said Gorman.
According to Gorman, the impacted area stretches for approximately half a mile from the intersection of Point Road and Bullivant Farm Road to the intersection of Point Road and U.S. Route 6, near Manuel and Felizarda Pina Park.
“It’s just not a good patch job and we’ve been working to try to get that remedied,” said Town Administrator Geoffrey Gorman.
The Dennis-based business Speakman Excavating is responsible for the attempted road maintenance, which was completed approximately three weeks ago.
Speakman Excavating is “very aware of the issues and that we are completely dissatisfied with the unprofessional patching” and they will repair the errors made, according to Gorman.
Members of the Marion Department of Public Works reached out to each resident along Point Road that has been impacted by the botched road repairs, in addition to responding to emails and phone calls from concerned citizens.
“The Department of Public Works has really been working hard to address the concerns and then let [the residents] know that we are fighting hard with the contractor,” said Gorman, adding that Marion officials “empathize” with the situation and are “trying to get it fixed as quickly as we possibly can.”
“The final patch will happen [around] the end of September, and then no one has to worry about the bouncy [road] anymore,” he stated.
Alongside finishing the final paving job in September, Marion plans to accomplish a “long-term strategic improvement” of Point Road that Gorman states will most likely begin next spring.
“I appreciate everyone’s patience, especially those residents [that] live on Point Road,” he said.
