Marion Boy Scouts, Police partner for fundraiser

Nov 17, 2012

The young members of Marion Boy Scouts Troop 32 are no strangers to community service. In fact, they are good at rallying folks for a good cause.

In following with the Scouts' tradition of holiday fundraisers, the boys spent the last week gathering food and hygiene product donations from just about every one they could get to.

“They each canvassed their own neighborhoods, and sure enough, there were bags of donations left on people’s front doorsteps for the boys to pick up,” said Kathy Giles, a mom of one of the Scouts.

The boys’ enthusiasm for the fundraiser convinced the Marion Police to join the effort and collect donations at the Police Station.

The Scouts also received a helping hand from Shaw's in Wareham, which donated the bags to transport the donations as well as a few gift cards.

The boys spent Saturday morning at the Police Station boxing and bagging all of the donations, which ranged from non-perishable foods to toothbrushes as well as cash and check gifts for Damien’s Food Pantry in Wareham.

It was all business inside of the station as the boys made sure that the boxes weren't too heavy, foods were grouped together, and of course, that nothing was left behind.

By Saturday, the Scouts and the Police had enough donations to fill the backs of two pick-up trucks and several other vehicles.

With the holidays fast approaching, Giles said the need for donations is especially great.

“We have Thanksgiving coming and even Christmas. It’s a good time of year,” Giles said. “I don’t think any of the boys have done something like this before. It’s a good chance to meet new people and get involved.”

On Saturday, the boys hand delivered the donations to the food pantry. After that, they celebrated their good deed with a bike trip near the Cape Cod Canal.

“It’s a good mix. We have community service, but we also have fun,” said Robert Nakashian, Chair of the Troop 32 Committee.
