Bidding brings in bucks for Mattapoisett roads

Mattapoisett’s ongoing road repairs got a boost on Friday after several town-owned properties were auctioned off.

Seven of the 13 parcels up for auction were purchased, several of which went unsold in last January’s auction.

Some of the properties were buildable; however, Treasurer Barbara Herbeck said, “Most of them were only good to abutters.”

Herbeck said at least 50 people showed up for the auction, which was held at the Mattapoisett Library. The seven properties yielded a profit of $124,500 for the town.

“I thought the prices we got for some of the vacant land, based upon what we were hoping to get, were very good,” said Town Administrator Mike Gagne.

The money has been designated for road repairs.“That’s good when you consider that we went to Town Meeting and asked for $220,000,” said Gagne.

Gagne hopes to have another land auction in the spring with more properties.

At November’s Special Town Meeting, voters approved $15,000 to survey properties, delineate wetlands, and perform other assessments.

“We hope to offer up some lots that are ready for building. That’s the ones that can make some big money,” said Gagne.
