Tabor football player Tevin Montgomery named to U.S. National team
Tabor Academy football player Tevin Montgomery is a humble kid.
Besides being a star on the school’s football team, Montgomery was recently chosen as one of seven defensive linemen for the 2013 under-19 U.S. National Football team.
The team is organized each year by USA Football - the non-profit that develops young players and works in conjunction with the National Football League.
On February 5, Montgomery will compete against the International Federation of American Football in the fourth annual International Bowl in Austin, Texas.
In the fall, Montgomery will attend Boston College as either a secondary education or a sociology major.
He hasn’t decided which subject he would most like to take on yet, but what is certain is that Montgomery will be joining the Eagles on the football field in September.
Just don’t expect to hear about any of Montgomery’s accomplishments from the kid himself, says football coach Conor Bozzi.
“He’s not the kind of person to gloat about it,” Bozzi said.
In fact, Bozzi said the first he heard of Montgomery’s most recent accomplishment with the National team was during this interview.
Montgomery, who has only been playing football for two years, said he was thrilled when he first heard the good news in October.
“I knew this was my only opportunity to represent the country and play football against international competition. What better way to represent your country other than playing one of your favorite sports?” Montgomery said.
Montgomery only played in five games this season due to an ankle injury, which kept him benched for the remaining games.
Still, Bozzi said Montgomery certainly made an impact in his time on the field.
“He is the highest rated recruit for us,” Bozzi said.
“He has tremendous physical attributes. There’s a high ceiling on his talent and he’s showed a lot of potential.”
Also a basketball player, Montgomery is sitting out this season to ensure that his ankle is healed in time for the International Bowl.
To prepare for the game in Texas, Montgomery said he is busy lifting weights and doing cardiovascular exercises.
Having played his last season with Tabor, Montgomery recalled one of his proudest moments as a Seawolf.
“My favorite game moment from this past season was when Kyle Losardo and I were rushing the quarterback and forced him to throw a bad pass, which led to the receiver fumbling the ball,” Montgomery said.
“In the blink of an eye, Losardo had run the ball back for a 65-yard run. This was a special moment because it was during our last home game.”
As for Montgomery’s future, Bozzi said, “I see great things for him.”
