Mattapoisett to seek repair, extension of NSTAR gas lines
A discussion on extending underground gas lines along Mattapoisett's coastal areas brought up issues of NSTAR’s negligence in repairing existing pipes.
Mattapoisett resident John Folino spoke with Selectmen on Tuesday, saying he would like to petition NSTAR to add natural gas lines to areas south of Route 6.
Folino said natural gas was cheaper than other fuel and could be safer than oil and gas tanks that are susceptible to damage during coastal storms.
“I have no stock in the gas company,” said Folino. “If natural gas were provided, that would alleviate any storage tanks on site.”
He added that fuel could be shut off before any weather events to prevent dangers.
“I’m sure there would be a cost. I’m not expecting the town or some other source to pay for my betterment,” said Folino. “What I would ask the town to do is to encourage NSTART to give a quote.”
Town Administrator Mike Gagne said he would contact NSTAR and include Mattapoisett Neck Road and Brandt Island Road, where residents have also shown an interest in natural gas lines.
Just as important, town officials want to see NSTAR take more responsibility for maintaining old pipes.
Highway Surveyor Barry Denham voiced concern that NSTAR would start laying new pipelines without repairing the existing ones.
Selectmen Chair Jordan Collyer agreed. “We’ve got a number of mains that should be renewed. One on Aucoot Road, Bowman Road, Mechanic Street, Route 6 at the Chowder House. I can keep going,” he said.
Collyer, also a firefighter, said the Fire Department has to deal with “nuisance leaks” in the pipes, sometimes as often as three times a week, and it costs the town money.
“The say they’re going to take care of it, but before you know it, we’ve gone out 30 times in a season,” said Collyer.
Gagne will write a letter to NSTAR detailing the town’s concerns and interest in extending pipe lines.
