Tabor wrestling heads to New Englands, Nationals

Feb 9, 2013

With 87 wins in the last five years, including 20 wins to date in its current regular season, Tabor Academy’s boys varsity wrestling team is aiming to dominate at the New Englands  and the Nationals Tournaments.

Next weekend, the Seawolves will compete in the New Englands.

The weekend after that, it’s their chance in the Nationals competition where the team will face off with the best of the best from varsity wrestling teams across the country.

Last year, Tabor placed fifth overall in the New Englands competing against 48 other teams.

With 16 straight wins going into the tournaments and only two losses this season thus far, the Seawolves are confident but not overly so, said coach Conor Bozzi.

“We were off to a good start,” Bozzi said. “I think we can do better. There’s some work to do for each kid to find their next level of performance.”

By the end of last year, the team said goodbye to 12 graduating seniors.

This year, the team has seen new players step into leadership roles, Bozzi said.

Wrestlers Todd Bazarewsky of Plymouth, sophomore John Anderson of Bridgewater, and senior co-captain Miko Maguire have all helped with the team’s success, Bozzi said.

“We practice everyone together. We have 30 kids. With that many kids, there’s always a difference in age, size, and strength. Each kid has a partner to work with,” Bozzi said.

As for what Bozzi expects for the remaining matches, the coach said there’s always room for improvement.

“They’re progressively getting better,” Bozzi said.

“We want to see everyone do well. We need to be aggressive on our feet and always go for takedowns. Don’t wait for things to happen. We’re always pushing the limit.”

Last weekend, Tabor was scheduled to compete in the state championship Class A’s Tournament. However, due to the winter storm, the tournament had to be postponed. No date has been set for the Class A’s yet.

Last year, Tabor finished third out of the 13 schools competing in the Class A’s.
