‘Good group of guys’: Old Rochester boys lacrosse team in reach of postseason tourney
MATTAPOISETT — The Old Rochester Regional High School boys lacrosse season in 2024 has been defined by learning and teaching.
With just three graduating seniors this year, the team is young. Some players are brand new to the sport, according to head coach Michael Forns.
Even so, the team has amassed a 7-6 record and sits within tournament contention with a handful of games left to play.
The Bulldogs lost 14-2 to Nantucket High School, the top Div. 4 team, Monday, May 13, a game Forns called a “good lesson” and “good inside look at what the tournament would look like.”
“You always want to get better from every contest, so I saw a lot of positives that we can move forward and move on with,” he said.
Some on the team are football or basketball players new to the game of lacrosse, who wanted to play “because it’s a good time” with a “good group of guys,” something to do and let loose, Forns said.
“There’s goals,” Forns said. “There’s hitting. It’s an exciting game, so I think that draws kids naturally.”
With a few games left in the regular season, the Bulldogs are above .500 and ranked within the Div. 3 tournament field. Every remaining game — a majority of them on the road — will matter, according to Forns.
“It’ll be interesting to see where it shakes out,” he said. “I’m excited. Every game is up for grabs.”
