‘It’s been a great run’: Marion liquor store to close after more than 40 years

MARION — It was one week before Burton Corkum’s 35th birthday in 1981 when he bought Spirits, the retail wine and liquor store on Front Street in Marion Village.

More than 40 years later, the store still operates. But for Corkum, who moved to Marion in 1973 and has lived in Mattapoisett since 1976, it’s time to sell Spirits after a successful four-decade stretch.

“It's been a great run,” Corkum, 77, said. “I enjoyed it. I really enjoyed it a lot. But time is up for me.”

The property is likely to remain a wine store. The unit on Front Street and the Spirits business itself, which includes the liquor license, were sold to a corporate group that operates businesses under the name Vinodivino, according to Corkum. There are four Vinodivino wine stores in or around Boston.

Among other memories, Spirits participated in Marion’s Christmas Stroll since the event’s inception 30 years ago. The store collaborated with Uncle Jon’s Coffees for the holiday festivity.

Corkum said he will “miss the people more than anything.”

“Ninety-nine percent of what I enjoyed about the business is all the people I've met and all the people I've dealt with over the years,” Corkum said. “Teaching people about wine and spirits and giving back to the community.”

Spirits will remain open for the next few weeks, according to Corkum.
