100 days smarter! Kindergarten celebrates milestone
Thursday marked the 100th day of school for Marion kindergarten students, and they celebrated by dressing up as centenarians and practicing their counting skills.
"One hundred is such a special number in kindergarten," said Sippican School teacher Marti Medeiros. "In kindergarten, to reach one hundred is such an accomplishment."
Medeiros saw the idea posted on Facebook, and lead the celebration for the first time last year.
With only about 80 days of school left, she said, "It's almost like the countdown to first grade."
The number 100 is also significant for the kids because they've been practicing to count to that three-digit milestone for months – by ones, fives and tens. Many kids said they couldn't count to 100 when they started school, but now they can.
"It's wicked easy," said Josh Marcolini.
On Thursday, the kindergarten classes practiced more counting with fun activities designed to reinforce their understanding of the number. They created necklaces with 100 pieces of Fruit Loops and stamped 100 stamps in a book.
Adding a Valentine's Day element to their celebration, kindergarten teacher Lisa Horan's room featured 100 hearts decorated by her class and suspended from the ceiling.
The students, who have about 94 years until they reach 100, also got to have fun dressing up. When asked what 100-year-olds wear, the answers were interesting.
"They wear sweaters, white necklaces. They wear glasses," said Natalie Meleo.
Holden Campbell's response was simpler: "Old people clothes."
Many kids came with their hair painted or powdered gray and in a bun. Others wore tweed, and yes, there were a lot of cardigans.
The day of activities was a fun way to commemorate students' first year of elementary school.
"It's a big achievement for them," said Horan. "They're one hundred days smarter!"
