2012 state primary brings low number of Marion, Mattapoisett, Rochester voters to the polls
There was a typically low voter turnout for the 2012 State Primary Election in Marion, Mattapoisett and Rochester.
Only 25 percent of registered Mattapoisett voters came out to the polls on September 6.
Marion saw only 18 percent voter turnout and Rochester had just 13 percent.
Rochester Town Clerk Naida Parker said her town has “historically” seen low voter turnout for the state primary.
Most years, she said, average around the same percentage of registered voters at the polls.
“Most people come in and want to make sure that they are registered to vote in November,” Parker said.
“The focus is on November for the Presidential Election.”
All three towns saw the same candidates emerge victorious in the few contested races.
The winners of the primary will face off on Election Day, November 6.
Statewide, William Keating walked away with 59 percent of the Democratic votes for Representative in Congress.
Walter D. Moniz edged out Nicholas Bernier and Oliver P. Cipollini, Jr. for the Democratic nod as Councillor.
William Straus beat Abilio Bill Soares for the Democratic Representative in Congress nomination.
Christopher Sheldon was chosen as the Republican Representative in Congress nominee over Adam G. Chaprales in the three towns and statewide. The two were neck-in-neck, which delayed the polling results until Tuesday night.
Elizabeth Warren will be running on the Democratic ballot for Senator in Congress against Republican incumbent Scott Brown.
