4th of July Horse Show celebrates 68 years

More than 60 riders strutted their stuff in the Marion Fourth of July Horse Show at Washburn Park for the long running tradition.

The show, now in its 68th year, attracted competitors ages 6 and older to practice horsemanship skills in the day-long event on Saturday.

Judges awarded ribbons to riders based on how well they were able to maneuver the ring and how well riders and horses worked together.

For the past few years, the show has been a fun, informal one for riders. While most shows record points that are reported the United States Equestrian Federation, Marion’s show is all about getting riders comfortable.

“It’s a good way to get a horse in a show situation without the pressure,” said Jennifer Goddard. “It lets riders learn show etiquette and give them an introduction to what to expect at a horse show.”

Goddard, who judged the trail class at the show, trains horses and teaches riders at Levaland Farms in Middleboro.

The trail class, a recent addition to the Horse Show, attracted 30 riders looking to practice navigating different obstacles through a wooded course.

“Trail has become a new thing that a lot of people are getting into,” Goddard said. “It demonstrates a rider’s ability to take some leadership with the horse.”

A highlight of the show, the costume class featured some of the youngest riders wearing patriotic outfits.

Molly Figueiredo took first place dressed as the Statue of Liberty, complete with torch. Cole Devlin, wearing a red, white and blue cowboy outfit earned second place.
