Adagio Arts and Wellness brings family activities under one roof

Before Adagio Arts and Wellness, there were at last six degrees of separation between Bible studies, Mixed Martial Arts, cartoon anime, book clubs and ballet shoes.

But the new Marion business, on the corner of Route 6 and Point Street, promises to bring all these things together, and many more.

Owner Danielle Lopes, a Marion native, said teaching Spanish and dance and helping out with her mother’s travel agency had left her running on empty.

“I spent more time traveling to get to work and was wanting to find a way to put it all under one umbrella,” she said.

Adagio allows Lopes to consolidate her interests into one location and help people in the community do the same.

“You’re taking martial arts over there, dance classes are down the street...We want to put families all under one roof,” said Lopes.

“That leaves less time driving around and more time to have dinner around the table together,” said Lopes’s sister-in-law and general manager Amanda Souza.

Souza said the category “arts and wellness” leaves room for Adagio to host a variety of classes and groups. The company’s catalog will feature courses dealing with physical, social, emotional and environmental wellness for every age group.

So far, Lopes and Souza have interviewed around 40 instructors who will teach everything from anti-bullying and ballet, to mash-ups like Chi Song, a yoga and singing class.

Spiritual wellness is also a focus for the team who hope to include Bible studies and practices like Reiki on their lineup.

“We really want to be open to everyone’s spiritual growth as long as it’s bringing something positive. We don’t want any judgment here,” said Lopes.

“Spiritual strength is what brought this together. Everything that has happened from the moment we decided to do this came from prayers, and He’s showed himself in this building,” Lopes said.

Although they won’t have their grand opening until July 7, the sisters-in-law said their summer classes are almost half full, and they’re already working on their fall lineup.

“Danielle and I make a really good team. I envy her ability to go out into the world and take on whatever comes her way,” said Souza. “I’m very shy, but I know how to put everything into a file and get it organized.”

Lopes and Souza hope to develop an equally symbiotic relationship with area businesses, by exchanging free advertising for discounts that Adagio members can get around town.

“We want to reach out to local businesses so we can all work together and help each other rather than competing, because it’s not easy in small business,” said Souza.
