Additional students not likely to stress Sippican School
It’s still uncertain how many new students will enroll in Sippican School once Marion Village Estates apartments are completed, but it is unlikely to strain the school’s population, says Superintendent Doug White.
At the Jan. 7 School Committee meeting, White said there should be space in classrooms for additional students.
“Unless they all come into third grade, then we are in pretty good shape to manage some of the potential growth into the town,” he said.
Committee members were relieved by the numbers.
“Looking at the wiggle room, I feel so much better,"” said Christine Marcolini.
The committee discussed the potential impact of new students from the new housing enrolling before the summer, but White said discussions with developer Ken Steen indicate that the apartments likely to have children will not be available until May.
The “first wave” of open apartments is expected to go to older residents without children.
As applications for the affordable housing units are approved, Steen said he would notify the superintendent.
White also visited the complex with the owner of the school bus company to check out options for picking up and dropping off children.
White said there is a designated bus area, but the town must approve the road leading into the development first. There are still some questions on the number of students and the road,
White could not confirm how the additional location would factor into an existing bus route.
