Adventure trip unites teachers, students
The Old Rochester Regional White Mountain Education Adventure began a few years ago as a way to challenge students and give them a better connection with faculty.
Now the program, led by High School Asst. Principal Mike Parker, happens twice a year with sophomores in the fall and juniors in the spring.
Students and staff hike and camp for a weekend in New Hampshire’s White Mountain.
Parker said has the trips have improved the students’ view of their teachers and administrators as they get the opportunity to talk and conquer a steep mountain.
At Wednesday’s School Committee meeting, sophomore Amber Jones, one of nine student on the trip, spoke about her experience.
“I never thought I could hike that far for nine hours,” she said.
Aside from the physical challenge, Jones said it was also rewarding to spend time with her best friend and to get to know the adults on the trip.
“I wish there were a few more teachers who got to come,” she said. “The relationship that we had before is completely gone now. I know that if I have a problem inside or outside of school I have countless teaches I can go and talk to.”
