After house fire, police charge residents with marijuana possession

Victims of a house fire in Mattapoisett have now been charged with cultivating marijuana and possession with intent to manufacture.

On Feb.18, the town’s Fire and Police Departments were dispatched to 87 County Road, the home of Paul Wildnauer and Jill Jarvis.

The home is located at the couple’s business, Great Scapes Nursery.

Wildnauer was the only person home at the time of the fire.

According to a statement released by Police Chief Mary Lyons on Friday, firefighters found a room on the second floor of the house that appeared to be for growing marijuana. They notified Detective Craig Leblanc who was on the scene.

Once it was safe to enter the home, Leblanc was taken to the room and found approximately 12 marijuana plants on the floor. He also observed several large aluminum curtains on the floor. The walls of a closet in the room were wrapped with aluminum curtain material. Several heating lamps were observed hanging from the ceiling through the open closet door.

Leblanc was directed to the attic where firefighters had found more marijuana.

In the attic, he observed a small pile of dried marijuana on the floor next to a melted fan. The attic appeared to be used as the drying room for the cultivation of the marijuana, according to police.

Leblanc spoke with Wildnauer regarding the marijuana cultivation. According to Lyons, Wildnauer said Jarvis had a license to cultivate marijuana, but he was unable to produce legal documents to that effect. Lyons said no permit, current or expired, is on record with the department.

The Massachusetts Board of Health does permit some medical patients to grow marijuana. That information is not public, however.

Jarvis was out of town when the fire occurred.

In her statement, Lyons said, “It was clear that the number of plants exceeded the allowable number of plants a person with the proper documentation is allowed to grow.”

A total of 34 plants were seized, along with drug paraphernalia.

Items used to grow and produce the marijuana plants as well as two rifles without permits were also seized.

The investigation as to the cause of the fire is ongoing.

Wildnauer, 54, and Jarvis, 60, have been charged with Class D cultivating and possession with intent to manufacture marijuana.

An attorney for the couple declined to comment.
