Art Center looks to recreate scenic studio tour

MARION — Art Drive has always been a Dartmouth and Westport event. But now the Marion Art Center is hoping to have art fans drive through Marion for a spinoff event.

Though the Art Center has not set any concrete date for their version of the three day studio tour, it has a leg up now that its executive Director, Jodi Stevens works for the Art Drive.

Marion Artist Liz Howland also participated last year with Dartmouth artist Barbara Purdy. The juried tour offers art fans the chance to see artists in their space.

“It’s a gorgeous drive through scenic communities,” Howland said.

The artist called the experience “wonderful,” and other participants “a nice community of artists,” adding that “it’s always been interesting to have a mix of clay, ceramics and glass artists,” like Purdy.

The Marion artist works in fabrics, specifically with Indian Kantha cloth, made from recycled saris.

“The fabric already has a history and story. It’s very interesting,” Howland said.

Color and texture in fabrics inspire her.

The Marion Art Center has a list of about two dozen names for its own traveling show. But Howland’s said that “it takes a lot of energy and work and manpower” to do.

The original Art Drive will host a preview exhibition at the Dartmouth Cultural Center at Olde Southworth Library on July 26 through 28. The studio tour will be Aug. 9 to 11 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit Howland at 21 Memorial Ave. in Dartmouth.
