Arts of the Pacific
Katherine Higgins will lead a presentation and conversation on art in the Pacific Islands on Thursday, March 19 at 6:30 p.m. Higgins will discuss a range of customary and contemporary art by indigenous artists.
The beauty and diversity of the Pacific Islands has inspired artwork that embodies and reflect the unique cultures, histories and environments across the Islands. Higgins will provide a brief introduction to the diversity across the region, which includes 25,000 islands and a quarter of the world’s languages.
hen she’ll do some island hopping to discover artistic practices such as recording genealogy through tattoo and fiber arts, production of stone and feather currency, and contemporary paintings and performance that confront colonization and nuclear testing or celebrate enduring cultural traditions.
The second half of the presentation will be for questions from the audience. There will also be an opportunity to discuss how the modern, globalized world has transformed islander’s perceptions of some of these artworks.
Higgins is an art historian, educator, curator and occasional artist, who specializes in contemporary indigenous arts. She has worked with artists and arts organizations in Oceania, primarily in Hawai‘i, Fiji, Aotearoa/New Zealand, Sāmoa and the Cook Islands. Higgins currently serves as arts editor for the academic journal “The Contemporary Pacific” published by University of Hawaiʻi Press and as a trustee for TransCultural Exchange.
