Aurora borealis illuminates night sky above Tri-Town

Oct 14, 2024

The aurora borealis illuminated the sky above Marion, Mattapoisett, Rochester and beyond last week.

According to the Space Weather Prediction Center’s website, the aurora borealis — also called the northern lights — was made visible due to a strong geomagnetic storm, which is a disturbance in Earth’s magnetic field due to solar activity.

Sippican Week readers in Marion and Rochester shared photographs capturing the dazzling night sky.
