Beach house to get overhaul this summer

Mattapoisett’s beach house, located at Town Beach, is set to get a much-needed overhaul come June 1.

The beach house’s bathrooms will be updated and made handicap accessible. A wheelchair ramp will also be added onto the rear entrance.

Mattapoisett Recreation is spearheading the project for the beach house, built in the early 1950s.

“The idea is to get more people down here by creating a user-friendly building,” said Mattapoisett Recreation chair Jeremy Collier. “We are offering additional swim classes this summer…trying to get a fishing program going and Saturday morning programs to increase visitors.”

The main room will also be available for children’s birthday parties.

Other improvements include a mural designed by Mattapoisett resident Debra Nettles in the main room, and planks across the crossbeams to provide extra storage space in the small building.

The planks will cover signatures from lifeguards dating back to at least 1954 that are visible in the upper reaches of the ceiling.

But, said Collier, “All the names will be there in perpetuity.”

Improvements will be paid for with an appropriation from last year’s Town Meeting. Collier also hopes voters will approve a $50,000 article from the Conservation Commission for repairs that will be presented at Town Meeting.

He said eventually Mattapoisett Recreation would like to add a deck to the front of the building.
