Behind the scenes at The Nutcracker

Around 15 years ago, longtime dance teacher, choreographer and Mattapoisett resident Kay Hanley Alden created a program meant to teach children about what goes into a theater production.

The program, “Behind the Scenes at the Nutcracker,” intertwines storytelling, music and dancing.

“It's a story hour that shows how the production of theater at a professional level works,” said Alden.

Elizabeth Taber Library will serve as the stage for the show on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 10:30 a.m.

Kids in attendance will listen to excerpts from the ballet story of the Nutcracker and also get a chance to use props and become characters like the Sugar Plum Fairy, said Alden.

Alden said she produced her first dance show in her garage at the age of 10 and hasn’t stopped doing so. She has taught dance overseas and at camps and local theaters.

“It’s been a part of my life forever,” said Alden. “My mother was a wonderful singer and my father was a wonderful dancer. We loved music in my family.”

Alden’s inspiration for coming up with “Behind the Scenes at the Nutcracker” was to help kids better understand the Nutcracker and give “a little synopsis” while teaching them about the significance of props and costumes.

She said she hopes both children and parents in the audience leave with a different feeling towards music.

“I hope they take away appreciation of music and think ‘Gee, I think I could do this. I think I'll try it,’” said Alden. “I would like to promote that people can do it.”

Former student of Alden, Carol Frates, will be assisting her with the show.
