Belated kudos for soccer team

MARION — Selectmen recognized the Boys Grade 8 Division 2 team for a past league championship medal and award at a Nov. 5 meeting.

The team came in third in June. Their record for the season was 7-1, and they lost only to Abington. The boys were also recognized with a sportsmanship award based on the testimony of referees and other coaches.

Many of the boys have played together since they were eight years old.

Coaches Mike Murray and Steve Wyman commented that the players are an “unbelievable group of young men,” and they were proud to take “any chance to acknowledge them.”

Although the third place finish was an accomplishment, coaches said that they were most proud of the sportsmanship award.

They thanked families that were there and those that were not at the meeting for being the “superglue” that kept the team together, and recognized that the young athletes to some degree taught them how to coach, as one had been coaching some of the players since they were four in the Oceaneers.

Each player got the chance to shake hands with the Selectmen and got a medal from Town Administrator Jay McGrail.
