Body camera grant approved for Marion police

MARION — Marion police officers will eventually be wearing body cameras, thanks to a $46,000 grant from the state Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, Town Administrator Geoffrey Gorman told Select Board members at their Oct. 17 meeting.

The current police contract accommodates the potential use of body-worn cameras, Gorman said, so the transition should be “smooth.’’

Body cameras record the actions of police officers in an effort to obtain exact information about situations police are called to.

The date when the department will start using the cameras is not known, Gorman said, but could be as far off as two years in the future.

“Like anything,’’ Gorman said to select board members, “they’re difficult to procure,’’ he said of the equipment.
