Bringing a legend to life

ROCHESTER - Tom Kinsky, a second grade teacher at Rochester Memorial School and the brains behind a popular organic garden there, is at it again with the creative projects, this time with a new play.

"On Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, my second grade class at Rochester Memorial School put on a play for parents and classmates entitled ‘The First Tortilla,’ an adaptation they created of a Mexican legend telling how tortillas came to be part of the Mexican diet,” Kinsky explained.

The play featured characters such as villagers, jaguars, a hummingbird, ants, two brave young girls, even a Mountain Spirit.

Kinsky called his students’ efforts “A big success,” adding that, “One of the highlights of the play was the scene where an on-stage volcano exploded and lava came shooting out of the crater.”

The class achieved this effect by throwing red weighted plastic “fireballs” and garbage bag “rocks” from behind the volcano, eliciting startled shrieks and laughter from their audience.

The final performance of the "2K Theater,” included a reception for the actors and audience.

“After the last performance, students enjoyed Mexican-themed snacks which their parents brought in, before getting to work on the set take-down and room clean-up,” Kinsky said.
