Brother and sister sell lemonade to support the New Bedford Women's Center

Jul 18, 2011

Most seven and four-year-olds spend summer weekends finger painting, playing videogames or at the beach.  Abbie and Will Wikston decided to spend one raising money for the New Bedford Women’s Center by running a lemonade stand at their grandparents' house.

“They’ve sold lemonade for three years now but this is the first time they’re doing it for charity,” said Jamie Wikston, their mother.

“The people at the women’s center don’t have anything so we want to give to them,” said Abbie.

Both Abbie, 7, and Will, 4, excitedly shouted to passerbys, asking every last person who crossed their path to buy a glass for $0.25. A consistent stream of people walked by throughout the day, mostly due to the Harbor Days celebrations going on just down the street. Sales were brisk pretty steadily throughout.

“It started around noon and stayed consistent,” said Jamie.

“I like to pour the stuff into the thing,” said Will as he poured a glass, smiling.

Few could resist the pair of smiling, gap-toothed blondes or their good cause and, despite the low price tag, the two budding entrepreneurs had raised $50 by mid-afternoon.

“Some people are giving us extra because they know it’s for charity,” Jamie said.  “We’ll probably use the proceeds to buy food and donate that to the food pantry at the center.”

“We can make money and give it to the women’s center,” said Abbie. “It’s a nice thing to do."
