Candidate profile: William Do Carmo

May 7, 2019

William Do Carmo hopes to draw on his local state and federal experience in construction and public works to earn a Planning Board position. He is currently the owner of Carmo and Associates, which provides general contracting, real estate brokerage, and consulting services.

While he said that the current town employees are, “very fine people,” he added that, “they don’t seem to be very energized.” He described Marion as having a case of “perpetual debt syndrome,” but said that he believes that the money is out there and leaders need to know how and where to get it.

He was drawn the the Planning Board because he currently sits on the Affordable Housing Trust, which gave him a look into town committees.

He believes the Planning Board should “throw a wide net, and bring in other people. Bring in MIT School of Design, Rhode Island School of Design to figure out how to fix problems, even if you have to have prize money attached.”

He also believes that the board requires some foresight. “The tri towns have to watch what they’re getting themselves into,” he said, explaining that all too often the towns are enticed by the profits without considering consequences of development. He also calls for a higher standard of construction.

Ultimately, Do Canto believes his best skill is his leadership and “take action” mentality.

“I don’t want to hear ‘I want to,’ I want to hear what you’ve done. If townspeople want someone to get things done I’m the guy,” he said.
