Capital Planning Committee ranks priorities for 2015

Apr 7, 2014

After meeting with town departments to find out what their top needs are for the coming fiscal year, the Capital Planning Committee has prioritized a list of projects and purchases to submit to the Finance Committee for consideration in the town budget.

The committee members whittled down the list to 18 requests and ranked them at their Friday, April 4 meeting.

“This is the longest list we’ve ever had,” said Chair Chuck McCullough.

The list tallies up to approximately $1.2 million and includes the needs of the Fire and Police Departments, EMS, schools, the Highway Department and the library.

Repairs to the Fire Department’s number 4 engine in the amount of $15,000 topped the list, followed by a $35,000 utility vehicle for the Police Department and window repairs to the library at $7,000.

Technology was also a priority in the Capital Planning needs with a number of upgrades bundled together and placed sixth on the list.

At the bottom of the list is $49,000 for new math curriculum for the elementary schools, placed next to last. A new police cruiser at $32,500 was given the bottom slot on this year’s list.

As the Water and Sewer Department is self-supported through user fees, its planning needs were removed from the list, as were waterfront needs.

McCullough called the list a “roadmap” for the year and said it would go to the Finance Committee for discussion.

“They draw the line,” he said. “An item may not make the list this year, but if monies become available later in the year for Special Town Meeting, then Fin Comm can come back to the list.”
