MATTAPOISETT — At approximately 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 3 two cars crashed at the intersection of Route 6 and North Street in Mattapoisett, backing up traffic in all directions.

“There was a two-car motor vehicle crash,” said Mattapoisett Fire Chief Andrew Murray at the scene. “One car went out into the woods after they collided.”

According to Murray, “one person was transported to the hospital.”

According to the Mattapoisett Police and Fire Department scanners, the injured person was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford.

Bystanders on the scene stated that there was only one occupant in the vehicle that went off-road.

The car that veered into the woods went broke through the Mattapoisett Lions Club’s community bulletin board on the south-east corner of the intersection. The sign was completely destroyed.

After the two vehicles were removed from the scene, Mattapoisett fire fighters cleared the remains of the bulletin board from the corner of Route 6 and North Street.

The Mattapoisett Police Department did not respond to requests for comment as of Wednesday, July 5. A police department spokesperson said the crash is “currently under investigation.”
