Cold water, blazing times in Lions Club Triathlon
Swimming a quarter mile, biking 10 miles, and then running 3 more -- it seemed that the only thing racers in the Mattapoisett Lions Club's annual Triathlon didn't have to do was strap wings on their backs and fly to the finish.
Over 150 participants from as far away as Washington, D.C., Maryland and Pennsylvania lined up on the shores of Mattapoisett's Town Beach to participate in the triathlon, which traditionally signifies the beginning of "Harbor Days," the town's week-long summer festival.
This year's event was the second year that the race has been run as a sanctioned USAT (USA Triathlon) event, which means that participants can qualify for longer triathlons in the race should their times be fast enough.
The race was slimmed down last year, as organizers cut short a brief running phase which included Route 6. The cut meant that the running portion now only covers 3.1 miles, instead of 5.5, but the shorter distance didn't seem to deter participants.
The race began with the national anthem, performed by Mattapoisett resident and Miss Massachusetts Jillian Zucco, who was on hand to crown 2017's winners.
Brian Hughes topped the 2017 edition of the race, in an ultimate time of 50:20.
Kimberly Shattuck of Bridgewater won the women's division for the second year, crossing the finish line in 56:21.
