Crowd lines up for food, live music at Shipyard Park

MATTAPOISETT — Guests lined up a half hour in advance at the Mattapoisett Town Wharf to try a selection of food from local restaurants and listen to live musical performances at the 16th annual “Taste of the Town” hosted by the Mattapoisett Woman’s Club.

Eileen Marum of the Mattapoisett Woman’s Club publicity committee said that club members began setting up around 8 a.m. The event was scheduled to start at 5 p.m. but a line had already formed by 4:30 p.m and the first customers were allowed in around 4:45 p.m.

The event took place on Tuesday, July 16, and is part of the annual Harbor Days celebration hosted by the Mattapoisett Lions Club under the tent at the town wharf. Proceeds from the event went towards scholarships for Mattapoisett students attending college.

Customers exchanged cash for tickets before entering the tent, at a cost of $10 for 20 tickets. Beverages were sold for two tickets, and food items ranged from four to ten tickets each. Once inside, customers had options from Turk’s Seafood, Oxford Creamery, Tastebuds Bistro, Ying Dynasty, Mattapoisett Diner, Nick’s Homemade Pizza House, The Inn on Shipyard Park, Uncle Jon’s Coffees, Shipyard Galley, The Walrus and Captain and On the Go.

Outside of the tent, vocalists from The Showstoppers Performance Troupe entertained the crowd with both group and solo performances. The troupe consists of local students from grades two through twelve. One singer, Kelsey, 14 described the selection of music as “family friendly” and said that her favorite song of the day was a rendition of Cindi Lauper’s “True Colors.

In addition to food and music, customers had the chance to win raffle prizes from the Mattapoisett Lions Club at a cost of $5 for one ticket, or three for $10. Grand Prizes include a Martha’s Vineyard Weekend Getaway, free golf for a group of four at over ten local courses, and $1000 cash. Winners will be announced on Sunday, July 20 around 4 p.m.
