CVS plans for Mattapoisett cut short
Plans to develop a CVS pharmacy in town have ended. Property owner Wayne Walega said he stopped negotiations with the company last week.
Walega began talks with CVS a year ago about the 1.3-acre property, which contains the former Seaport Village Ice Cream & Coffee Shoppe and Mayhew Valet Pro Cleaners, the Post Office and an apartment building.
There was, however, significant backlash from the community toward a 13,000-square-foot building on the corner County Road and North Street.
The proposed building’s architectural
design would have been similar to CVS sites on Cape Cod.
The Planning Board opposed the project, saying the traffic increase would be a problem. The CVS would also have a drive-thru window.
Planning Board Chair Thomas Tucker said town bylaws deny drive- thrus in the “village business” district, which stretches along Route 6 in town.
“Our bylaws are specific,” Tucker said. “And they were designed to keep cookie-cutter businesses out. It will affect the whole look of the town.”
Walega said he ended the negotiations after issues such as the building’s design and size could not be resolved.
Walega said he has no other development plans for the site.
