Dirt bike race returns to Mattapoisett
Let’s get one thing straight. Motocross and dirt bike racing are not the same thing.
“Dirt bikes are more groomed to do jumps and all that,” said Jodi Bauer, Trail Boss for the upcoming Pilgrim Sands Trail Riders race in Mattapoisett.
“Dirt bikes are more for natural terrain, and to race as fast as you can through these trails,” explained Bauer. “It’s really not motocross.”
Bauer should know.
“I’ve been riding since I was 10 years old,” she said. “I got into the racing five years ago. It’s a great family thing.”
On Sunday, Pilgrim Sands brought its second dirt bike race to Mattapoisett’s Town Landfill on Tinkham Hill Road.
Bauer said the turnout for the race was, in one word, “Awesome.”
“It was very, very successful,” Bauer said. “The weather was good and it was just awesome.”
The first race had over 100 participants, and Bauer said its second Mattapoisett race was much improved.
“We’ve definitely got better terrain. The track is laid out better, and we have eliminated the swamp area as much as we could,” she said.
Bauer said riders are coming from all over New England.
“There’s no place to really ride legally. This provides places to ride and be legal,” said Bauer.
Even for those who don’t ride dirt bikes, Bauer said the event is a fun spectator’s sport.
Pilgrim Sands plans to bring the race back for a third time during the spring, although no date has been determined yet.
