Dog Walk-A-Thon brings Mattapoisett closer to first dog park

MATTAPOISETT — Good boys on parade.

The fifth annual Mattapoisett Dog Walk-A-Thon saw plenty of playful pooches promenading proudly around the town on Saturday, Aug. 28.

The event is held every year to raise money to build a dog park in Mattapoisett according to its organizer Freemin Bauer, though it had to be cancelled last year due to covid.

Bauer, 22, first had the idea that he wanted to build a town dog park in 2015. He had originally planned for it to be his Eagle Scout service project, but when it didn’t quite meet the program’s criteria, he ended up fixing up the Fairhaven Dog Shelter instead.

Still, he didn’t forget about the dog park, and held the first Walk-A-Thon soon after.

Now, at the fifth Walk-A-Thon in six years, they have raised about $4,000 towards the park.

Freemin’s mother Jodi Bauer — a Mattapoisett Select Board member — is also involved with the dog park project and said that once they’ve raised $10,000, they can apply for a grant from the Stanton Foundation that would pay for the rest of the project.

“We’ve got a long way to go still, so it’s not going to happen overnight,” she said. “But people want a dog park.”

Jodi said they only want to build a modest dog park and have eyed the former Holy Ghost Society grounds on Park Street as a possible location, as it is already zoned for recreation.

“We’re not looking to build anything super elaborate,” she said, explaining that Freemin’s idea is to build three small enclosures designated for big, small, and senior dogs respectively.

They also want the enclosures to be round “so they can’t get backed into a corner.”
