Easter eggs are gone faster than a bunny can hop

MATTAPOISETT — Dark storm clouds loomed over The Mattapoisett Lions Club’s April 20 Easter egg hunt, and the organizers started early, worried about rain. They needn’t have worried, for the kids snatched up 2,000 eggs in about two minutes flat.

Children got prizes for bringing back the colorful plastic eggs. With 250 prizes and between 75 and 100 kids participating, the pickings were particularly rich.

James Nadeau, president of the Lions Club, said that the event usually draws around 200 people, but may have attracted fewer participants this year because it was delayed from last week because of rain, and still threatening rain on April 20.

Stuffing the eggs only took a couple hours with 30 Lions Club members helping. The organizers separated the hunt into different areas of Ned’s Point based on the participants’ age.

“It’s a lot of setup time for a short event, but it’s fun to watch it all unfold,” Nadeau said.

Children were also offered chocolate after posing with the Easter Bunny, who hopped over to Mattapoisett to take photos.

Rob Haley did much of the planning for the original April 13 event, but was scheduled to be in Amsterdam when it got delayed by a week, so Nadeau took over the day-of logistics.
