Essay contest asks kids to write about life before iPads
The Rochester Historical Society wants Rochester kids between the ages of 12 and 14, to put down their iPads and pick up their pencils. The historical society is sponsoring a writing contest comparing the playtime activities of 12 to 14 year olds in the 1950s with that same age group today. The essay should be at least one page.
Ask parents, grandparents, neighbors or visit the Historical Society’s museum to help unlock essay ideas. What would you do without your iPad? What would you be doing if you couldn’t text or Tweet or watch videos?
The top three essays will be announced at the Historical Society Booth at the Rochester Country Fair in August. First prize will be $100; second prize will be $75; third prize will be $50. Submissions must be postmarked no later than Aug. 1. Entries should be mailed to Rochester Historical Society, P.O. Box 171, Rochester, MA 02770. Include your name, address and age on the essay. Questions may be directed to Edyie Johnson at 508-961-7401.
