Fallen Marion firefighter receives special escort

Local fire and police departments and State Police escorted the body of Marion firefighter Thomas Nye to the Saunders-Dwyer Funeral Home in Mattapoisett on Feb. 28. 

Firefighter Nye's body was transported by a procession of fire engines Thursday morning from Tobey Hospital in Wareham to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Mashpee, to undergo an autopsy.

Following the autopsy Nye was taken in procession from the medical examiner's to the funeral home for family and other firefighters to pay their respects. 

Marion Police, Massachusetts State Police, Wareham Police, Bourne Police, Mattapoisett Police, Joint Base Cape Cod Security Forces helped with the procession, and Wareham Fire, Onset Fire, Wareham EMS, Sandwich Fire, Joint Base Cape Cod Fire paid their respects along the way. 

Nye was 72 and served as a call firefighter with the Marion Fire Department for 45 years. He responded to and helped extinguish a chimney fire on Point Road shortly before 1 p.m. on Tuesday and then returned home.

He suffered what is believed to be a cardiac incident and collapsed early Wednesday morning. Nye was transported to Tobey Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His visiting hours will be held Sunday, March 3, 2019 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals.
