MATTAPOISETT — Students at Old Rochester Regional High School shared books containing generations of their personal family history at the school’s annual genealogy class celebration on Wednesday, Jan. 15.

The highly anticipated event is organized by English teacher Katheen Brunelle as part of a genealogy class where students are able to “explore their personal histories while honing research, writing and creative skills.”

“The genealogy course at the high school has become a staple of our project-based learning initiatives," said Principal Michael Devoll. "Mrs. Brunelle has shared her passion and professional work in genealogical research with her students. It is wonderful to see the students sharing their research with their loved ones."

In addition to sharing their familial histories, students also explored their cultural background by bringing in ethnic delicacies eaten by their ancestors and sharing them with the class throughout the semester.

“The ancestry books are more than just a grade — they are a legacy for students and their families to cherish for years to come,” said Brunelle. “This celebration is a true testament to the hard work and dedication these students have shown throughout the semester. It’s also a unique opportunity for the students to get a taste of the culture and history of one another’s ancestors.”
