Fire Department offers free smoke detector batteries

Replacing smoke detector batteries is one of those things few people remember to do. But this month, the Mattapoisett Fire Department is offering free battery replacements through a partnership with Interstate Battery.

“I put this idea together and reached out to a few battery companies,” said Lt. Justin Dubois.

Interstate Battery responded with 250 free batteries that will in turn go to the residents of Mattapoisett.

“This is done at no cost to any town residents,” Dubois said.

Dubois has set Sept. 13 and 14 as the days firefighters will come out and replace smoke detector batteries. If those days are inconvenient for residents, Dubois said he will work around peoples' schedules.

“We’re not going to turn away anybody,” he said.

The fire department recommends changing the batteries when people change their clocks, but as daylight savings was moved back to Nov. 2 this year, the replacement program will be a preemptive strike on the colder season.

“We [want] to make sure smoke detectors are working before they turn their heaters on,” said Dubois.

Through the battery program, Dubois also hopes to educate kids on fire safety.

“We want to see the children take part in a home fire drill, so that we make sure they know where the safe meeting place is and it’s actually a safe meeting exits,” he said.
