Fire departments respond to storm calls

First responders in Mattapoisett and Rochester answered numerous calls for storm damage on April 13, as a rainstorm with strong winds arrived in the area. 

The Rochester Fire Department reported seven downed trees both on wires and across roads. It was working with the Highway Department of clear the roads throughout the evening. 

By 6:38 p.m., 50% of Rochester Eversource customers had lost power. The Fire Department posted at about 9:30 p.m. that Eversource had multiple crews in town, and urged residents to be patient and to not approach downed wires, as they could still be live. 

As of 9:30 a.m. on April 14, about 21% of Rochester customers remained without power, but by 4 p.m. power was restored to all but a few customers. Fire Chief Scott Weigel explained that the incidents from the night before were widely spread across town, but that there were fewer than a February windstorm that resulted in 38 calls. 

Though Marion and Mattapoisett suffered fewer power outages according to Eversource data, the Mattapoisett Fire Department that crews had responded to 14 calls, which included broken pole, carbon monoxide alarms, trees and power lines down and arching wires. 

On Water Street, a pole had snapped at its base and was leaning toward nearby houses.On County Road, a broken telephone pole and tree blocked the road. On Stony Hill Road, a tree came down, taking power lines with it. 

In Marion, a tree came down on a power line on Sparrow Lane. The Fire Department responded to assess the damage, and stayed until Eversource arrived to repair the wires.
