Fireworks, 5Ks, Harbor Days, art displays: Summer events in the tri-town
After a late-breaking $10,000 donation from Tabor Academy spurred donors to raise the last of the $40,000 needed, it's official: Fireworks will erupt at Silvershell Beach in Marion on Sunday, July 2.
The donation came in on Thursday, May 18, with four days left to go in the Marion Fireworks Committee's "Twenty from Many" campaign.
Organizers launched the effort on donation website GoFundMe earlier this year with the hope that if many residents and visitors donated $20 to the cause, the group would raise the tens of thousands of dollars needed to put on the fireworks show.
But with more than $12,000 left to raise last week, things were looking dicey, and the campaign was extended an extra week. (See the campaign at https://www.gofundme.com/marion-fireworks.)
After the $10,000 Tabor Academy donation, nearly 40 donations from people and businesses rallying to generate the remaining dollars.
"Come on...we're so close!" donor Dawn Phillips wrote while submitting her $20 donation.
"Communities are at their best when celebrating together. It's perhaps more important than ever before to gather with our neighbors around our patriotism, and we're grateful that we're a part of the fun," said Tabor's Head of School, John Quirk, of the $10,000 donation.
Memorial Day is on the horizon, the Marion fireworks are scheduled, and there are a whole lot of other events throughout the tri-town to add to your summer calendar. Learn about them below!
