Former Red Sox give tips to Rochester ballplayers

From fans to former players, Red Sox nation has many citizens. On Saturday Sept. 14, two Red Sox veterans again donned jerseys to run a youth baseball clinic sponsored by the Rochester Police Brotherhood.

This was the first year the brotherhood sponsored the clinic. Officer Kevin Flynn said the brotherhood raises funds throughout the year. The free clinic is a thank you to residents.

“This seemed like a good family event and one that would support kids in our community,” he said. Following the kids’ event, brotherhood members played a softball game against other veteran Red Sox players.

Before that, former Red Sox players Dennis Ray “Oil Can” Boyd and Sam Horn gave their professional advice to the 10 kids that attended. Boyd pitched for the Red Sox from 1982 to 1989. Horn played first base and had a reputation has a power-hitter for the Sox from 1987 to 1989.

Boyd and Horn lobbed fly balls, batted ground balls, and had the kids practice their throwing and catching skills for an hour.

Both offered encouragement throughout the clinic. Overheard from Boyd: “Whip it out there. Get the ball in the glove. That’s what I’m talkin’ about!”

Horn, a former announcer for New England Sports Network, used his skills to motivate the kids, while keeping the clinic light and fun.

Before the clinic, Boyd said he attends about 12 of these events a year.

“For the people who need help raising funds for a good cause, I’ll show up,” he said. “Doing these workouts with the kids is something I enjoy personally.”
