Fourth-grade basketball team starts new year off with a win

MATTAPOISETT — The fourth grade Old Rochester Travel Basketball Association team kicked off the new year with a big win over their Mansfield opponent on Saturday, Jan.5. 

Following a relatively slow first half offensively, the young Bulldogs tightened up their defense and stretched their lead deep into the fourth quarter. The late offensive run pushed the team past Mansfield with a final score of 29-19, improving the team’s record to 3-2.

Michael Devoll, the coach of the team, said that he was impressed with his team’s adjustments and performance in the second half.

“I thought they did a great job, and I thought they played well,” said Devoll. “We talked at halftime about what we needed to do better, and they went and did that.”

Devoll told his players that he was proud of their decision-making in the second half, and also took note of their improved defense. He added that this is the first year in the travel league for his athletes. 

“These guys are all new to travel basketball, so this has really been a learning experience for them this year,” said Devoll. “And they’re learning a lot, so it’s fun to watch.” 

Grady Oliveira led the team in scoring with 12 points, and also racked up seven rebounds and an assist. Mateo Paquette led the team in rebounds, tallying an impressive eight boards and finished the game with six points. 

Old Rochester participates in the Metro West Basketball league, with players from fourth grade to eight grade.
