Freezin for a Reason brings icy start to New Year

Jan 1, 2013

Mattapoisett Town Beach was packed with polar plungers on Tuesday as over a hundred people gathered for Freezin for a Reason.

The event, a fundraiser for South Coast families dealing with cancer, was initiated by Will and Michelle Huggins.

Will has battled cancer for several years, and Michelle said support from the community has been invaluable.

“We want to pay it forward because everyone has cared for our family so much. We’re always looking for ways to give back,” Michelle said.

At noon, dozens of people rushed into the water, several dressed in costume.

Aside from the icy harbor and snow covered beach, the event was a warm one. A heated tent, provided by Sperry Tents, was filled with cupcakes, hot cocoa, and chowder for sale. Outside, a bonfire also kept participants and spectators warm.

Proceeds from the day will go to the BAM Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit based in Acushnet.
