Future engineers visit Lockheed Martin event
Who said boys get to have all the fun?
Students from across the South Coast visited the Lockheed Martin Sippican campus for the second annual "Women in Engineering" event for a night of hands-on learning.
In addition to hearing from Lockheed employee Amy Chiao and UMass Darmouth student Kate Buck, the future women of engineering had the chance to rebuild a flashlight using materials such as cardboard, a paper cup, and copper wire. Chiao also demonstrated how a lemon-powered battery works.
"This event is so important to us," said Faith Ball, engineering senior manager at the technology company and a Mattapoisett resident. "There's a need for women engineers, and it's a great career. Going into this field was one of the best decisions I've ever made."
She said last year's event had girls building small hovercrafts and racing them across the room.
"It's really important to me that we get girls more interested in engineering," Ball said.
Abbey Stark, also a Mattapoisett resident, was new to the event and said she liked working with her hands.
"I like building things," said Stark. "It's like solving a puzzle."
